SINGLE REVIEW: 'Philomela' | Brodie Milner

TRIGGER WARNING: RAPE / SEXUAL ASSAULT - if either of these topics trigger you or you find them uncomfortable to read about, then please look after yourself and click off of this post.

Leeds-based Brodie Milner only became a prevalent face on the scene at the start of 2020, when he released his debut, Acheron. Six months on, he returns with new track, Philomela, which... wow. Just wow.

As seen in Acheron, we know Brodie is heavily inspired by Greek mythology, which has also been inputted into Philomela, as he explores rape culture and criticises its perpetrators through the mythological character of Philomela.

Philomela was a young female character, who was raped by her sister's husband Tereus; after trying to confront and expose her attacker, Philomela's tongue was cut off and she was silenced. Far too often in society nowadays, women are sexually assaulted and are manipulated to stay silent, which is the issue Milner wanted to tackle through this new single; first taking inspiration from the allegations surrounding Harvey Weinstein.

The track is agressive, using dark, energetic melodies to both criticise exploitative men and also celebrate the women who speak out against them. A very sensitive topic, Milner approached it with extreme caution, as "it was imperative that I did not attempt to speak on behalf of women's experiences, but instead stand beside them to oppose the men who perpetuate sexual violence." The metaphors he's used from fiction to help form his lyrical content help amplify this track and its message; Milner has very successfully created an empowering, uplifting, critical, dark indie ballad, and I love it.

Philomela will be available on all streaming platform on 24.07.
