NEW MUSIC ROUNDUP: W/E 05.07.20

Hiya! Welcome to the first edition of 'New Music Roundup,' a weekly (or bi-weekly, or whenever there's a large surge of music, really) post full of mini reviews on all the music that's been released throughout the week. It's impossible for me to write an in-depth piece about every bit of music that's put out, but I want to give it a bloody good go. NMR is a good way for me to still get some content in and showcase the best up and coming talent, even if I don't have the time or the energy to put something 'proper' together.

This week we've been absolutely spoiled, with new music almost each day & New Music Friday presenting us with some bangers. Like I say, there aren't going to be any full reviews here, just a little artist introduction and a few words on the piece, to (hopefully) entice you and encourage you to check it out! So without further ado, let's get on with it:

Beach Riot - Wrong Impression
I first discovered this Brighton-based quartet in 2019 when they released their single, Stuck Inside, and I've been following their musical journey since. They released their new single, Wrong Impression, last Tuesday. It's a fun, fuzzy pop hit; hooky guitars, pounding drums, and funky techno beats making this track pretty damn cool. Just imagine this track live - the vibes are immaculate

Mili and Berti - That's Alright (Living Room Release)
Taking inspiration from the likes of The Beatles and John Mayer, UK duo Mili and Bertie manage to combine classic sounds of a past era, whilst also introducing their own unapologetically unique sound, whilst also staying in touch with modern pop music. Their third single, That's Alright, was released on Tuesday and this is something I could see playing out of a coming-of-age movie; their full, quirky voices creating something to make you smile. This duo's music is extremely popular over in the States, but us lot in the UK are missing out on something special.

Ren - Ready For You
Bloody hell. Ren. I could talk about this man all day long, his music is so special. Since rebooting his career on a feature track with fellow Brighton musician, Sam Tompkins, Ren has reached new heights. When we went into lockdown, Ren began producing Demos (Do Not Share), Vol. 1, releasing a new track each week until we had a full EP. He's doing the same once again, preparing for Demos, Vol. 2, and on Thursday he released the first track from the upcoming EP, Ready For You. My God, this is a tune and a half. That's all I'm gonna say. Listen to the track, and let it do the talking for you.

Danny Violet - Animate Me
I. Love. Newcastle. The talent coming out of that city is insane. One of these crazy talented people is Danny Violet, who released his debut single, Animate Me, on Friday. This track is unlike anything you've ever heard before; my mind was all over the place when I listened to it for the first time. It'll definitely make you go "WOAH," then "ooh?" Then you'll fall completely and utterly in love with it. I promise. 3 and a half minutes of utter bliss. Stan Danny Violet.

ELLUR - Alive
Almost exactly six months on from her debut, Leeds' ELLUR has released her second single, Alive. Much different from Reflection, this track is a lot stronger and truly shows ELLUR's talent; her voice projects and is full of passion. Lockdown's not been half bad for ELLUR's career; she's released her new single but has also been doing 'lockdown livestreams,' to keep spirits high. Very much recommend this little wonder.

The Blinders - Black Glass
I feel like I'm very late to the Blinders hype, I only recently started listening to them, but I instantly fell in love so I couldn't not mention their brand new single, Black Glass. Their sophomore album, Fantasies of a Stay At Home Psychopath, is being released on the 17th of this month; a whole two years after their debut, Columbia. This new track is a complete ear pleaser, a creeping, dark, melodic rock song. Am absolutely buzzing for their new album, and you guys should be too.

Patawawa - For H (Just Jack remix)
2020's been full of releases for Matlock's Patawawa, as they kicked off their 2020 with That Other Guy. 7 months on (can you believe we're in the seventh month already? Crazy), Patawawa have released their second remix, this time of Just Jack's For H, adding their classic funk grooves and synth-pop melodies to it. You can't not dance to this track, it just really gets you moving.

Charmides - Corporate Man
"Fuck the government and fuck Boris," are the vibes for Charmides' brand new track, Corporate Man. It might only be two and a half minutes long but this alt-rock track, with its pounding riffs and honest lyrics, is an accurate representation of the state of our country and the government in charge of it. Front man Luke Derbyshire sings about "their suits, and ties; their greed, and lies," and Corporate Man is a rock song gone political, which we love.

Juno - Everytime
South Coast outfit Juno have been making music since 2017, and have always been known for their fresh, indie sound. Their brand new single, Everytime, is a slightly heavier track, and is the start of a new chapter of Juno's career. Lead vocalist Max Mullen has a pretty unique voice, but I bloody love it. I must admit, I haven't ever listened to much of Juno, but this track has inspired me to do so. That's how good it is.

in earnest - come upstairs
I am in tears. This track is so bloody beautiful, but also so, so, so sad. in earnest's music is created to open up and start a discourse on mental health, and their new track come upstairs was written about Thomas' experiences helping Sarah whilst she was in a terrible headspace. I can't fit in earnest into a genre, and say their music is for fans of certain artists, because their music is so unique and personal to them, that it'd be unfair to even try and compare it to somebody else. Just listen to it, that's all I can tell you to do. No words I write will ever be able to do this track justice. Bloody hell.
