SINGLE REVIEW: 'Nature's Curse' | Mawpit

Formed in Cardiff in late 2019, Mawpit have instantly impressed with their take on contemporary alt-rock. The trio's inspirations range from grunge, punk, pop and jazz music, and their music is an amalgamation of everything they love and believe in.

Their musical journey is only just beginning as on the 19th June, Mawpit released their debut single Nature's Curse, a political anthem with unforgettable lyrics and hard hitting melodies. Taking inspiration from Australia's wildfires and the rising concern of global warming, Mawpit write about the impact these issues had, and are still having, on the world.

This band definitely aren't afraid to speak out about socio-political topics in their writing, focusing heavily on feminism, environmentalism, politics and animal rights, and they share their feelings on these issues with vigour, elegance and passion.

Opening with a thunderous riff, listeners are thrown straight in at the deep end and get a taste of the raw power exuded from the track, before we experience the lullaby vocal verse. Written from the perspective of Mother Earth, Nature's Curse is a ballad for the humans that are settled on her land. She sings of her disappointment in the people as they ruin her land by burning her trees and slaughtering her animals.

I'm impressed with the lyrical production of this track; every word has been chosen carefully to ensure the message Mawpit are trying to convey is never ignored or forgotten. My personal favourite is "your greed will be the death of you, and you'll be the death of me," as we're left with a feeling of melancholy and forced to reflect once the song ends.
