SINGLE REVIEW: 'Man On The Bridge' | The Novus

Do you want to know something I learned recently? No? Shame, I'm gonna tell you anyway. Okay, so, we all love a boogie, right? When we get going there's no stopping us and we do, truly, 'dance like nobody's watching.' Well, there's a little old man who dances by the bridge at Camden Lock, and apparently he's been going for years, just dancing his little heart out.

That wasn't an entirely pointless story, don't worry. It's actually the inspiration for West Midlands-based The Novus' upcoming single, Man On The Bridge. Having been in production since last year, MOTB is a long-awaited and highly requested track, but it's finally being given to us on the 3rd July.

To gain a bit more of an understanding of the band and their sound, I streamed their current discography, and was surprised to find how jovial and upbeat Man On The Bridge is in comparison to their angsty, psych-rock, post-punk sound.

I knew this track was going to be something special only 30 seconds in; primarily because the whole concept of the track made me laugh so much, and there's a smile plastered on my face for the whole three minutes.

The slow-starting introduction is quickly taken over by a pulsing guitar riff and exuberant vocals. The verses of the track are consistent in their production, but the real winner presents itself when we get to the chorus: its catchy lyrics and the layering of vocals and the imposing instrumentals all come together to create a perfect, light-hearted melody.

MOTB is accompanied by a live lockdown demo of the B-Side, Castaway; this being a more guitar-heavy, 'rock-y' track; bearing much more resemblance to The Novus' typical sound. It's pretty much four minutes of guitar, but you definitely won't catch me complaining.

Alongside being put onto all the usual digital platforms, this single is the first of The Novus' work to be pressed onto a vinyl, which has been made possible thanks to Flying Vinyl. The 7" single, alongside other bits and bobs of merch, can be found on their Bandcamp.

Keep these guys on your radar - they're a pretty good find, and I'm excited to see where this new release takes them. Join the noise.

Man On The Bridge will be available on all streaming platforms on 03/07. Pre-save it here.
