SINGLE REVIEW: 'Chemicals' | Tasha Bloom

Self-proclaimed 'alt-pop fairy' Tasha Bloom only made her musical debut in January of this year, bursting onto Brighton's scene with dark pop track Okay. This single has racked up over 11,000 streams, gained her recognition on BBC Introducing The South, and also gave her the opportunity to speak on Radio Reverb about the '#OkayMovement,' something she pursued to bring awareness to the importance of mental heath.

Anyway, we're now in June, and Bloom is about to drop her sophomore single, Chemicals: another song following the motif of mental health. This ambient, almost buoyant, track - put together using upbeat drums and soft melodies - is an honest expression of Tasha's experience with mental health and substance abuse issues. Chemicals is a contrasting track; the raw, honest lyrical content alongside the optimism of the beat presents such an irony.

On the track, Bloom herself stated she made it so upbeat and sound so happy because "I wanted to connect with people who have struggled with mental health and substance abuse... the 'happy' elements of the song are there to represent the party culture of alcoholism and drugs, whilst also sort of exhibiting the desperation and want for serotonin."

So what we have here is a meaningful, crucial track, but also a pretty damn good alt-pop song. At only 21 years old, Bloom is displaying an insane talent as well as a huge amount of strength being able to filter such strong emotions into her music. With 2020 having been good for her and her career so far, I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next.

Chemicals will be available to stream everywhere on 26.06.
