SINGLE REVIEW: 'Drown' | Avenoir

For fans of the likes of Foo Fighters, Muse, and Nirvana, Leeds based alternative rock band Avenoir have made their way up the musical hierarchy and quickly made themselves known in and around Yorkshire, having played the BBC Introducing stage at Leeds Festival, and countless venues across England.

Following the majorly successful Orpheus and Eurydice, which has racked up 25,000 streams alone, Avenoir are back to blow our minds with new single, Drown. Different to previous works, this track is showing a new side to the band - but I'm definitely not complaining; the band have written openly, rather than trying to conform to just one style of music. On the song, vocalist Tye Jozefowicz has said that "lyrically speaking, the song primarily deals with the idea of old feelings making a reappearance; or perhaps a momentary emotional relapse."

Following the calmer, more 'soft' - if you could even use that adjective to describe Avenoir - vocals, it turns into typical Avenoir about half-way through with a long scream. You can never beat a good yell in the middle of a rock song, but the screams within Drown further the message of the track - pent up emotions are being released and we're letting go of our frustrations. Guitar-heavy instrumentals and coarse, raw vocals are what make this track so powerful. Obviously the song has its inspirations and its own set meaning, but Avenoir have shaped it in a way that it's ambiguous enough for listeners to take it, apply it to themselves and their own feelings, and turn it into a positive thing.

D'you need to get out some anger? It's the start of the year and we're all feeling stressed out and overwhelmed by the pressures of modern life, so relieve yourself of that: join Avenoir at Leeds' The Wardrobe on Friday 24th January, with support from Covent, DeadWax, and Rothschild.
