SINGLE REVIEW: 'Wordless Attraction' | In The Morning Lights
I'm back with a review of another Leeds band. Techno pop duo In The Morning Lights - made up of Matilde Mirotti and Frankie Harper - are releasing their fourth single, Wordless Attraction, on 22nd November. Writing and producing all their own music, the pair have gained recognition from mentions on Radio Leeds and spots on various playlists - one of these being Sofar's official international 'Now Playing.' In an interview with Leeds College of Music ahead of the pair's Sound City set, they revealed that "the band is named In The Morning Lights because the project is intended to represent everything a morning does - that moment of calm, those volatile few seconds before the day plays out."
Their sound is definitely unique, exploring the weirder side of a mix of genres - electronic pop meets hip hop. The tracks these two make, though, form meaning and a commentary on the human condition, creating characters and developing stories.
Wordless Attraction reveals a darker side to the duo's repertoire, being a complete opposite to their previous release, Wild Hearts. This track is a "blurred memory of someone you can't get out of your head," describing the magnetism between two strangers in a faceless, crowded room: dark, seductive verses emanating to an almost aggressive chorus. The quick-paced instrumentals featured in the chorus give the track a very secretive tone. Keeping in line with the precedent of vivid vocals created with June's release One Moment, ITML have created a stunning music video to follow the release of the single, giving life to the narrative of the song.
The pair are headlining Leeds' Hyde Park Book Club on the 18th March 2020.
